The Forgotten Duty of Islam – DAWAH
Assalam u alaikum
The topic suggests that we are talking about something that is somewhat neglected by the ummah. Something that has not been paid its due. Something that is not in the mind of even a good muslim. Yes; we are talking about dawah. We are referring to inviting non muslims to islam. In a country like india where 80% population is non-muslim; even sky is not the limit for dawah. Even though muslims have ruled this country for centuries yet majority of the people today are unaware of the pure and natural teaching of islam. No wonder – we find some non muslims full of hatred against islam. Many of them carry lot of misconceptions against islam. Many of them spread propaganda against islam. However, a vast majority of them is completely unaware of islam.
Who is responsible for that? Of course we are responsible to a great extent.
Quran is for All
Though we boast to call ourselves muslims yet we hardly try to fulfill its due rights. The Quran is message of Almighty God. For whom? For muslims? NO. For whole mankind.
2:185 – “Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong)……..”
Though Quran is for all; we have confined it to muslims only. We think it is OUR book.
Lanat of Allah
Allah sends lanat to those who conceal the message of Allah.
2(Baqrah):159 – “Those who conceal the clear (Signs) We have sent down, and the Guidance, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book-on them shall be Allah curse, and the curse of those entitled to curse”
Are not we too getting curse of Allah by confining the message of Quran to our households only? Are not we hiding it from our neighbor, friend, colleague who are not aware of message of Allah?
But Allah has not left us by telling our crime; but he has given solution also.
2(Baqrah):160 – “Except those who repent and make amends and openly declare (the Truth): To them I turn; for I am Oft-returning, Most Merciful”
So to get rid off this curse we need to repent, correct ourselves and then declare the message.
Prophet Muhammad was sent for all
Similarly Prophet Muhammad was sent for whole of mankind yet we don’t convey the same. We think he was OUR prophet. There is no ayah in Quran that says that Prophet Muhammad was sent for a particular community or group. After Prophet Muhammad received the first revelation; he was commanded by Allah to warn people from danger of hell.
74 (Surah Mudassir):2 – “Arise and deliver your warning”
The whole suffering of Prophet Muhammad was for dawah work. He was rained stones and humiliated at taif not for any reason except inviting people to one God. His concern for the people’s akhrat was so much that he would weep at night. He faced oppression at the hand of Quraysh for this dawah work. Even though he was offered all wordily pleasures by Quraysh yet he did not leave the path of inviting people to Islam.
What is Dawah
Dawah is an invitation to islam – the religion of God. Dawah is projection of Islamic teachings. Dawah is presenting about the oneness of Almighty God and his message. Dawah is conveying to people the message of their creator.
It is different from islah technically. When we work among our muslim brethren in order to improve ourselves then its is called islahi work. You meet your muslim brother and say – “Lets love Allah. Let’s fear the hell fire. Let’s offer 5 times salah. Lets be regular in jamaat-salah. Let’s follow the teaching of Prophet, let’s fear azab of qabr” – then its islah. And it is somewhat easier than dawah.
In dawah you need to meet and talk to someone who does not believe in Allah, who does not know about paradise-hell, who does not know what is salah and how to offer it, who does not know why one should fast, who does not believe in judgment day, who does not know about the concept of prophet hood, who does not know about Prophet Muhammad and his teachings. So dawah is one step before islah.
In Dawah we tell to not-yet-muslims about:
- Islam is religion of God
- Existence of God who is unique and alone
- Belief in prophet hood
- Belief in paradise-hell
- Judgment day
- Prophet Muhammad and other prophets
- Quran – the message of God
- Clearing misconceptions about islam
- Islam is against terrorism
- Non Veg eating is as per teachings of God
- Islam does not oppress women
- Islam is in sync with science
- Islam imparts highest level of moral values
- Why people don’t do dawah
In spite of knowing the need and importance of dawah, people have some hindrance. They have some misunderstanding or excuses that prevent them from doing dawah work. A few of them are:
- I myself don’t practice islam much
Usually people say that i myself don’t practice islam much; how I can go and tell to non muslims about islam. Here i want to ask one simple question: why you don’t practice islam? Do you think we have got certificate of jannah? Will Allah send us to jannah just because of our Arabic name or juma namaz? Since we have taken birth in muslim family so are we entitled for jannah? NO, NO, No. These all are our misunderstanding. Allah makes very clear in Quran that emaan+amal is required for salvation. Just by muslim name or muslim family or by offering juma namaz we will not get jannah. We have to enter into islam whole hearted and completely.
Dawah is an obligation. How can you ignore that? You need to practice islam and at the same time you need to propagate the deen. Prophet Muhammad said – “Propagate, even if you know one verse”. Don’t we all know at least one ayah of Quran? Can’t we propagate “Qul; hu wallaho ahad” i.e. “Say! Almighty God is one and only”
- Namaz, roza etc are sufficient; no need for dawah work
Some people say that we need to just follow pillars of islam i.e. emaan, namaz, roza, hajj and zakat. This is more than sufficient. However people forget that these are only pillars and not complete structure. Islam is complete way of life. Pillar without structure is useless. If only these 5 things were necessary for the salvation then there was no need for the Revelation of Quran containing 6000+ ayah. Allah would have described these 5 things in one small surah and that would have been sufficient. But No, whole Quran is required for the guidance of mankind. And whole Quran is dawah. Ayah of Quran is sign of Allah; we have to call people to Allah.
- Let muslims become good muslims first then we will reach to non muslims
Some say that first let muslims become very good muslim then we will work on non muslim. Believe me, no day will come when you can say that today all muslims are very good muslims; now we need to go to non muslims. Quran never says so, Prophet Muhammad never taught so. .Dawah and islah – has to go in parallel. Quran is for all. islam is for all. Did not prophet Muhammad invite people to deen throughout his life? Dawah was his mission; sahaba too carried out this mission and spread across the globe to carry on the message of Allah.
- Quran says-“Lakum denakum wale yadeen“
Some people say that Quran says that for non-muslims is their religion and for us is ours religion so why we should go and tell them about islam. People forget that Allah is not justifying that religion of non muslim is correct. If you read the complete surah; surah Kaferun then you will find that Allah is telling – “Say to those who reject the faith”. So only when you have conveyed islam you can take rest.
This surah is telling that once you have presented islam to them and then if they reject then for them is their way and for your is yours. (In the qiyamah it will be made clear who was on correct path). So first we need to present islam.
- Quran says-“La ikraha fiddeeen”
Some people say that Quran says that there is no compulsion in religion so we should not do dawah. This ayah is definitely telling that no one can force anyone to accept islam – and that is true. One should never ever force, allure to accept islam. Faith should come from the conviction; it can not be forced. So we should only convey the message of God, present it in beautiful manner. 18:29; 10:99
- Quran says not to be friend non Muslims then how we can do dawah?
Horrific results of not doing Dawah
- Lanat of Allah on us
By ignoring dawah we are bringing havoc to ourselves and not realizing it. By not conveying the message of God to people and hiding it we are getting lanat of Allah and other creatures. As Allah says in Quran
2:159 – “Those who conceal the clear (Signs) We have sent down, and the Guidance, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book,-on them shall be Allah curse, and the curse of those entitled to curse”
- Partnership in the sovereignty of Allah
Almighty God is one and unique without any likeness, without any partner, without spouse or child. Yet, we see in our country people worshipping idols, human beings, animals as God. People are making partner in the sovereignty of Allah; people are degrading Almighty God; people are considering animals and idols equal to God. Allah says in Quran that shirk is the biggest sin. Then obviously, the work that will prevent shirk should be great and noble work. Dawah is must for stopping shirk.
If someone abuses our mothers and sisters then we would fight that person like anything. We can not tolerate someone abusing our ladies. Then how come we are tolerating abuse against Almighty God. Allah says in Quan that to say that Almighty God has begotten a son is the most abusive word against Allah; and we see in our society that Christians are saying that Jesus is Son of God – yet we tolerate it and don’t do anything to stop it.
19 (Maryam) : 88-92 “They say: “((Allah)) Most Gracious has begotten a son! Indeed ye have put forth a thing most monstrous! At it the skies are ready to burst, the earth to split asunder, and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin, That they should invoke a son for ((Allah)) Most Gracious. For it is not consonant with the majesty of ((Allah)) Most Gracious that He should beget a son”
Should not we go and tell to Christians that God can not have son; don’t abuse Allah?
- Not fulfilling the rights of Quran
When Quran is with us then it’s our duty to convey it to those who have not received it. It is one special duty of this ummah that they spread good thing and prohibit bad thing.
3 (Ale Imran):110 – “Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah.”
41(Fusilat):33 – “Who is better in speech than one who calls (people) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, “I am of those who bow in Islam”?”
16(Nahal):125 – “Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance”
- Propaganda and misconceptions against islam spreading
We see day by day bad news against islam in the media. Why it spreads? Because some people who have anti-Islamic mindset wants to spread misinformation against islam. Through newspaper, TV, Internet and programs people are spreading wrong information about Islam. Now when a normal non muslim hears all these he too carry wrong information about islam. We are not doing our work, but anti islamic forces are doing their work. So we too use the same media to spread correct information about islam. If we don’t do then this misinformation will keep on corrupting innocent minds.
- Non muslims hating islam
Due to all these non muslims start hating islam. When they see all around the picture of islam in bad taste then they start disliking islam. How they will love islam if they think that islam teaches to kill people because of their faith? How they will love islam if they find that muslim women is oppressed in islam? How they will love islam if they feel that muslims also do idol worship like hindus in the form of dargah? How they will like islam if they think that islam teaches to be dirty and unclean and always ready to fight -( because they find muslims around them like that only.)
If we do dawah then we can tell them the pure teaching of Quran.
- Society with degrading values
We see degrading social values around us because of unislamic environment. The family life is crumbling because of lack of islam values. The youth are moving faster into all sort of immodest activities. Our sisters are getting allured towards immodesty. Smoking, drinking alcohol, abusive words etc are some of the gifts of our degrading society. What is the solution? When we have left Quran and adopted unislamic way of life then these things are bound to happen. The only solution is propagating teachings of Quran and the guidance of Prophet Muhammad in our society.
Why DAWAH TRAINING PROGRAM needed?
When we understand that dawah is an obligation and NOT an option then we want to do dawah. We realize that this was a duty grossly neglected by us. We should spread the message of deen. We should try to stop shirk and glorify Allah.
However, some practical problems come when we want to do dawah.
- How to talk to Non muslim about islam?
- From where to start?
- How should i prove him about existence of God?
- How should i convince him about the concept of Prophet hood?
- How should i convince that after death human being will not take birth in the form of animal or plant?
- How should i tell that the concept of awagaman is false?
- How to convince that akhrat, paradise-hell is a fact?
- How to tell him that idol worship is wrong?
- How to tell that God is not present everywhere?
- How to tell that God does not take birth as human being?
- When i talk about Quran he talks about vedas, bhagwad geeta, ramayan, bible – what should i do?
- There is a hindu who himself does not believe in idol worship; then is he on tauheed?
- My hindu friend says me Salam; what should i reply?
- One person has reverted to islam – should we change his name and ask him to declare his faith in front of people in masjid?
- How to create opportunity for dawah?
- My hindu friends gets very angry because of meat eating – what to do?
- They hate us because of issue of terrorism – what is the reply?
- Quran says that we should not befriend Non-muslim then how i can do dawah?
and so on……
